Andriyivska (St. Andrew's) Church. 1747-1753. Built by architect I.F. Michurin and designed by V. Rastrelli in the Baroque style. The church was constructed on the site of the 13th century Khrestovozdvyzhenska (Elevation of the Holy Cross) Church. The iconostasis is embellished with carved, gilded ornamentation and paintings. The church has been restored several times. The single-domed cathedral, with its five lesser cupolas, seems to hover over the city. Its site has been allegedly chosen because it was here that Apostle Andrew, who first preached the Gospel to the Eastern Slavs, erected a cross.
