The Culver-Union
Township Emergency Medical Service, Volunteers, INC. (CUTEMS), is a not for
profit organization Many of the Emergency Medical
Technicians are also certified as Ambulance Drivers. The Director, who is
appointed by the Board of Trustees of the Town of Culver, along with the
volunteer Board of Trustees review current EMS operations and methods then make
recommendations to the Board of Trustees of the Town of Culver and Union
Township for funding needs. Both
organizations work together to provide Pre-hospital medical care at the
Basic-Advanced level (with paramedic intercept available) 24 hours a day, three
hundred sixty five days year to the
citizens of Union Township, Town of Culver, and Monterey, Indiana.
Currently, the
Culver-Union Township Ambulance Service ,a department of the Town of Culver,
employs two full time paid Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians, as well as
several part-time paid Advanced EMT’s filling in, and
a roster of volunteer drivers, Basic EMT’s, Advanced EMT’s, and Paramedics functioning in a limited role, dedicated
to the community.
Initial training for the
EMT-B is a minimum 144.5 hours of classroom and clinical time; the EMT-BA has
an additional minimum of 85 hours of classroom and clinical time. Members are
required by the Indiana State Department of Homeland Security to receive
continuing education over a 24-month period to maintain their certifications.:
EMT-BA’s 56 hours, EMT-B’s 40 hours, and Ambulance Drivers 16 hours of
continuing education.
As a result, once a
month, members of both groups participate in continuing education in various
areas and topics. Some areas are: American Heart Association’s Healthcare
Provider CPR and Defibrillator course, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, Blood
Borne Pathogens, Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations training, HIPPA,
Weapon of Mass Destruction, National Incident Management training, Incident
Command, Air Ambulance (Helicopter) ground operations, Environmental
Emergencies and Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC), as well as
continuing practice and review of certification-related skills. Monthly
in-services are offered the first Monday of each month at 2000 hours and are
open to any First Responder or EMT needed CEU hours. Check out the website or contact the
