The Culver-Union Township Ambulance Service was established in 1979 by the trustees of Union Township and the Town of Culver. Since 1979, many hard working, dedicated volunteers have provided countless hours to the community as Ambulance Drivers, Basic Emergency Medical Technicians (B-EMT), and Basic-Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians (BA-EMT).

Culver-Union Township Emergency Medical Service, Volunteers, INC. (CUTEMS), is a not for profit organization. It has BA-EMT’s, EMT-B,  and Indiana certified Ambulance Drivers. Many of the Emergency Medical Technicians are also certified as Ambulance Drivers. The Director, who is appointed by the Board of Trustees of the Town of Culver, along with the volunteer Board of Trustees review current EMS operations and methods then make recommendations to the Board of Trustees of the Town of Culver and Union Township for funding needs.  Both organizations work together to provide 24 hours, three hundred sixty five days year coverage to the citizens of Union Township, Town of Culver, and Monterey, Indiana.

Currently, the Culver-Union Township Ambulance Service a department of the Town of Culver employs two full time paid Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians and employs part time paid or PRN Advanced and Basic Emergency Medical Technicians.

Initial training for the B-EMT is 144.5 hours of classroom and clinical time; the BA-EMT has an additional 85 hours of classroom and clinical time. Members are required by the Indiana State Department of Homeland Security to receive continuing education over a 24-month period to maintain their certifications. BA-EMT 56 hours, B-EMT’s 40 hours, and Ambulance Drivers 16 hours of continuing education.

As a result, once a month, members of both groups participate in continuation education in various areas and topics. Some areas are: American Heart Association’s Healthcare Provider CPR and Defibrillator course, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, Blood Borne Pathogens, Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations training, HIPPA, Weapon of Mass Destruction, National Incident Management training, Incident Command, Air Ambulance (Helicopter) ground operations, Environmental Emergencies and Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC).  Guest speakers conduct much of the training “in house”. Members will travel out of the area to receive training so they can stay up to date with the many areas of Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine. Journals, training videos and DVD’s are also available.
