St. Sophia Cathedral. The oldest survived church in Kyiv--built in the first half of the 11th century. St. Sophia is the highlight of many visitors' stay in Kyiv. This majestic 13-dome church was named after the famous St. Sophia Cathedral located in Constantinople. The first library and school in Kyivan Rus' were situated in the church. St. Sophia made a huge impression on the ordinary citizens of Kyiv in that era, with its rich frescoes and mosaics, many of which are still intact almost a millenium later.
